Juliane Proft is Project Manager in Oncology at IOCB (Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry), located in Prague, Czech Republic. IOCB is joining us to the 6^th BioFit edition in order to present its technology, open for co-development and out licensing contact. She accepted to share with us the reasons why IOCB comes to BioFIT.

BioFIT : What is IOCB ?

Juliane Proft : IOCB is a public research institution located in Prague, Czech Republic, part of the Academy of Sciences. In more than 60 years of its history it has been focused on fundamental research in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Theoretical Chemistry and Chemistry of Natural compounds. The institute has also a tradition in the translation of results from basic research into practical applications, mainly in the field of human and veterinary medicine. A prominent example is Tenoforvir, an HIV drug developed in collaboration with the KU Leuven and Gilead Scientific. This translational effort continues, in 2017 we have signed license agreements with two major partners.

What are IOCB’s projects about ?

Most of our projects are developed around small molecules aiming at unmet medical needs like cancer, CNS diseases, viral and bacterial infections, metabolic syndrome and others. With around 40 research groups in various disciplines of chemistry, new projects are constantly evolving at the IOCB.

Why do you come to BioFIT ?

BioFIT is for us a good platform to meet with potential partners and we have made some fruitful connections in the past years. We are seeking for commercial partners to out-license and/or co-develop our technologies.

A unique level of academic research + improved access to equity investment

How come Europe is still lacking bioentrepreneurs?

Should we learn from overseas? Boston, do we have a problem?

It looks like a rather egg-and-chicken problem:

Should we convince talented scientists to become entrepreneur?
Should we attract entrepreneurs towards Life Sciences?
Are we sure that the support of technology transfer offices, is sufficent ?
Do incubators provide a wide enough network?

That is a subject as delicate as it is interesting, that we will be happy to debate with the plenary session dream team.

Moderated by no other man that John Hodgson, data Editor at Informa in UK, the entrepreneur point of view will be brought by one of the top 10 bioentrepreneurs under 30 in 2017, David Wehner, Managing Director of Venneos, DE. The VC point of view will be brought by Rafaèle Tordjman, Special Adviser at Sofinnova Partners, FR, who recently launched the vibrant network WITH Association. Our serial entrepreneur Alain Wagner, Director at the CNRS will address the ebbs and flows of entrepreneurship in the US while Valentin Lubbe will address the roots of the issue, as he is heading the Nordic Mentor Network for entrepreneurship of Denmark. Last but not least, Dick Hoogenberg, partner at EY will paint the background scene by settling the state of the market.

BioFIT will host the 3^rd edition of the “R&D dating for animal health and innovation” initiated by SIMV, the French association for animal health industry, on 28^th and 29^th November 2017, in Strasbourg.

Today, public-private and private-private partnerships are thought to be the needed leverage for innovation. Hence, the SIMV (the French association for the animal health industry) launched the “R&D dating for Animal Health and innovation” which aims at initiating high-level exchanges between the research departments of the veterinary medicine and diagnostics industry and public research, as well as biotechnology companies (start-ups).

By enabling face-to-face encounters, the event will enhance the visibility of cutting-edge research in France and in Europe, encourage investments, and lead to therapeutic innovation.
